How to get FIRE · Mindset and life after work

What will you retire to? Meet the uFIRE Hearth

FIRE buys you time. The harder question is what you'll fill it with. Here's a simple way to think about purpose, on the way to FIRE and after it.

The sun rising over pine trees beside a still mountain lake.

Ask people why they want FIRE and you'll mostly hear what they want to leave. The commute. The alarm. The meetings. The boss.

That's fair. But leaving is a single day. What comes after it is every day.

So here's the question we think matters as much as your FIRE number: what will you retire to?

This is general education and an invitation to reflect, not financial, medical or mental health advice.

Key takeaways

  • FIRE is the fuel, not the point. Money buys time; purpose is what you do with it.
  • The uFIRE Hearth has six areas: Hands, Energy, Adventure, Roots, Tend and Heart.
  • Start now. Purpose isn't only for after FIRE. It makes the saving years easier, too.
  • Work can count. Going back to work you choose can be part of a good life, not a failure.
  • Take the free self-check on the What will you retire to? page. It stays in your browser.

A fire needs a hearth

A fire on its own is just heat. A hearth gives it a place to burn, and it warms the people gathered around it.

That's the idea behind the uFIRE Hearth. Its six stones spell the word:

  • Hands: craft, making, and work you choose.
  • Energy: health, meaning your body, your sleep and your mind.
  • Adventure: new places, new skills, new ideas.
  • Roots: family, friends and home.
  • Tend: service, community and giving back.
  • Heart: meaning, faith and values. Every belief, and none, is welcome.

You won't feed all six at once. Nobody does. A hearth is tended, not finished.

It looks different for everyone

FIRE is for everyone, and so is purpose. A few made-up examples:

  • A firefighter might mentor new recruits (Tend) and train for a trail race with people from the station (Energy).
  • A teacher might spend a summer learning a language where it's spoken (Adventure).
  • An electrician might build a home workshop and take only the jobs they enjoy (Hands).
  • A dentist might keep one clinical day a week, because they still love the work (Hands).
  • A parent at home might swap babysitting with other parents to keep a weekly date night (Roots).

Use it on the way

The saving years can be long. Purpose helps you keep going, and some of it is nearly free.

  • Feed each area a little now. A walk, a library card, a weekly call to a friend.
  • Let it shape your number. A life built around trails and libraries costs less than one built around a sailboat. Knowing which is yours makes your FIRE number more honest.
  • Test-drive it. Live one week of your planned FIRE life on your next vacation. Notice what you reach for.

Use it once you're there

  • Give the first months a shape. Pick one thing from each area for an ordinary week.
  • Check in once a year. Kids grow, health changes, interests move.
  • Remember that work can be part of it. Retiring doesn't have to mean never working again.

Retire for a season

uFIRE's founder, Matt W, cut back to one day a week at 40, mostly to be there while his kids were growing up. Ten years later he's going back to work, by choice. In his own words:

"I've come to believe in retiring at specific times, for specific things. For me, the reason was to raise my kids."

And on why going back feels right now:

"Right now, when I'm home, I don't feel like I have enough going on. I need to be productive. Being more active in the business helps my mental health."

That's Hands and Roots, at different seasons of the same life. Read his full story.

Try it

Take ten minutes with the Hearth self-check. Rate how fed each area is today, write one small step for this month and one thing for FIRE, and see which areas have the most room to grow. Then pin one of your ideas to the Dreamboard.
